Forest Ingredients

Main Idea

A forest is a working, living ecosystem. Everything in a forest works together to help maintain a healthy environment for all living creatures in the forest. This includes trees, and like all other species, trees have special parts that help it grow and survive.

No prior knowledge regarding forests is necessary to successfully present this lesson plan.

  • "Happy Forest" worksheet
  • "Label That Tree!!" worksheet
  • Class Discussions:
    • Poster Paper/Chalk board
    • Paper
    • Pens
  • Mini Ecosystem:
    • Construction Paper
    • Felts
    • Glue
    • Shoebox
    • Scissors
    • Various craft supplies

Vocabulary

Ecosystem
the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit
Bark
the tough exterior covering of a woody root or stem
Heartwood
the older harder nonliving central wood of trees that is usually darker, denser, less permeable, and more durable than the surrounding sapwood
Leaves
a lateral outgrowth from a plant stem that is typically a flattened expanded variably shaped greenish organ, constitutes a unit of the foliage, and functions primarily in food manufacture by photosynthesis
Branches
a natural subdivision of a plant stem
Roots
the usually underground part of a seed plant body that originates usually from the hypocotyl, functions as an organ of absorption, aeration, and food storage or as a means of anchorage and support, and differs from a stem
Forest
a dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large tract
Pine Cone
a cone of a pine tree

Outline

  1. Brainstorm with class the definition of an ecosystem. Once all ideas have been taken from class, read the definition of an ecosystem to the class.
    • Definition: the total expanse of water, land and atmosphere able to sustain life. An ecosystem can be as small as a piece of rotting wood to as big as an ocean.
  2. Brainstorm with class that some examples may be of an ecosystem. If class does not touch on the following, add terms to the discussion.
    1. Mountains
    2. Deserts
    3. Oceans
    4. Rivers
  3. Distribute the "Forest Ecosystems" handout to each student to complete.
  4. Ask students to close their eyes and imagine they are in the forest. Without opening their eyes, ask students to put hands up to say what they see. Call on students to share as hands go up. Once a student has answered, they may open their eyes. Note answers on the board and have students open their eyes.
  5. Looking at all the items on the board, ask students if a forest is an example of an ecosystem
    1. The answer should be "YES"
  6. Explain to student that "YES" is the correct answer because a forest has many plants and animals interacting with each other to survive.
  7. Ask students the following riddle and have them thing about it for a few minutes and take suggestions to what the answer may be.
    1. RIDDLE: What has:
      Sun for light and heat
      Rain and snow for water
      Soil for vitamins and food
      Space for growing
      ANSWER : A Forest Ecosystem
  8. Distribute "Happy Forest" worksheet for each student to complete.
  9. Divide the class into the following groups:
    1. Pine Cones
    2. Roots
    3. Inner Bark
    4. Outer Bark
    5. Heartwood
    6. Leaves
    7. Branches
  10. Discuss with class how a tree is like planting vegetables in the garden. Place the seed in the soil (pinecone), water it (rain), give it warmth (sunlight) and watch it grow into a carrot (tree).
  11. Ask students why their part of the tree may be important and present to the class. After each group has presented their ideas and thoughts.
  12. Distribute the activity sheet "Label That Tree!!" to each student to complete.
  13. Create a Mini Ecosystem project.
    1. Make sure that each student has a shoebox. These are easy to acquire from local shoe stores if students do not have their own.
    2. Have students create their own forest ecosystem in the shoebox using various craft supplies.
